The Rocky Mountaineer train between Vancouver and Jasper National Park is our most versatile trip because Jasper offers easy access to rivers, lakes, canyons and the Canadian Rockies back country. Jasper is 288 km (179 miles) from Banff and 416 km (259 miles) northwest of Calgary International airport. You can tour from Jasper to Banff along the Icefield Parkway, one of the three most beautiful highways in the world. You can also catch an airport shuttle from Jasper to Calgary International airport. The transfer takes 6.5 hours.

Although Jasper is more remote than either Banff or Lake Louise, it is a veritable rail hub. From Jasper, you can take the train to Edmonton, Toronto or Price George and Prince Rupert. And you can return to Vancouver either on the Rocky Mounatineer or on the overnight ViaRail train.

Option 3: Car rental in Jasper – You can pick up a car in Jasper with or without a GPS system, explore the Canadian Rockies on your own, then drop the car in Jasper, Banff, Calgary or Vancouver.

Option 4: Return to Vancouver by way of Whistler on the Rocky Mountaineer. This option gives you the chance to experience 4 days on the Rocky Mountaineer on two different routes.

Option 5: Return to Vancouver on the ViaRail Overnight Train. Once you’ve had the experience of the Rocky Mountaineer all daylight two day trip to Jasper National Park, you may want to return to Vancouver by train but not take as much time. The answer is the ViaRail overnight train from Jasper to Vancouver. The train departs Jasper each Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 2:30 PM and arrives in Vancouver the following morning at 9:42 AM. Prices depend on the type of accommodations you choose on the train.

Option 6: Day Trip to Lake Louise and the Columbia Icefield – This all day tour, 466 km (290 mile) round trip, includes Lake Louise en route to the Columbia Icefield. This tour comes with or without the all terrain Ice Explorer ride onto the Athabasca Glacier.

Option 7: 25 minute Helicopter tour of Mt. Robson and the Canadian Rockies – A helicopter tour is the most awe inspiring way to experience the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies. This 25 minute helicopter tour includes the frozen “Valley of 1000 Falls, over Kenney Lake nd the spectacular Kinney Falls, Berg Lake and Berg Glacier. Finally see the North Face of Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.
